How Long Does Recovery Take After a Knee Replacement?

Most people are back to many daily activities within about 3 to 6 weeks, keep improving strength and comfort for several months, and may notice gains for up to a year. Regular physical therapy and home exercise make a big difference.

A typical timeline

Every recovery is different, but many people follow a pattern like this:

  • First days: standing and walking with a walker, starting to bend and straighten the knee.
  • Weeks 1 to 6: outpatient physical therapy, moving from a walker to a cane to walking on your own, and working hard on knee motion.
  • Around 3 to 6 weeks: many people are back to most light daily activities. Driving depends on which knee, your pain medicines and your surgeon's OK.
  • Months 2 to 6: building strength and endurance for walking, stairs and hobbies. Some swelling can last for months.
  • Up to a year: many people keep noticing improvement.

What helps recovery go well

  • Start physical therapy when your surgeon recommends, and don't skip home exercises.
  • Focus early on getting the knee fully straight and bending further each week. Stiffness is easiest to prevent early.
  • Manage swelling with elevation and ice as advised, and take pain medicine as prescribed so you can do your exercises.

When to see a doctor

Call your surgeon or get medical care promptly if you have:

  • Pain, swelling or warmth in your calf, which needs urgent attention
  • Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath: call 911
  • Fever, or redness, drainage or opening at the incision
  • A sudden increase in pain or swelling, or you can't put weight on the leg
