Neck, Jaw & Headaches

Why Do I Wake Up With a Stiff Neck?

Usually from spending hours in an awkward position, often with a pillow that's too high, too flat, or sleeping on your stomach. Most morning stiffness eases within a few days with gentle movement.

Common causes

  • Sleep position. Stomach sleeping keeps your head turned to one side for hours.
  • Your pillow. A pillow that props your head too high or lets it drop too low strains the neck.
  • A long day at a screen or driving can leave muscles tired and joints stiff before you even go to bed.
  • Stress often shows up as tight neck and shoulder muscles.

What helps

  • Gentle neck movement: slowly turn, tilt and nod within a comfortable range, several times a day.
  • Heat or a warm shower to relax tight muscles.
  • Sleep on your back or side, with a pillow that keeps your head level with your body.
  • Stay active, and avoid holding your neck still, which can keep it stiff longer.

If it keeps happening, or it doesn't ease within a week or so, it's worth getting checked.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor promptly if you have:

  • A stiff neck with fever, severe headache, or sensitivity to light: get emergency care
  • Neck pain after a fall or car accident
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or hands
  • Trouble walking, dizziness or changes in vision
